Your new body

Do you know how old are you? Of course you do! But I mean do you really know how old your body is? Let me introduce you some interesting things about our bodies:
Scientist studies have shown that not all the cells that we have in our bodies are there since birth, moreover it has been shown that there are some kind of cells that regenerate at a very high rate and that our bodies are evolving through all our lifetime. For example, intestine cells –that help absorb nutrients – renew themselves every three to five days; as they are constantly exposed to chemicals highly corrosive - that breaks down food- the barrier cannot withstand the stomach acid for long so they have a very high turnover rate.

The taste buds in our tongues renew themselves every ten days to two weeks.
The epidermis or surface layer of the skin is renewed every two to four weeks because the skin is the body’s outer protection and is exposed to injury and pollution.
Our lungs contain different cells that renew at different rates; the cells deep in the lungs have a steady progress of regeneration that takes about a year, while the cells on the surface have to renew every two or three weeks as these are its first line of defense.
Also, it takes an average of ten years to replace the bones that form our bodies; however in the middle age this renewal process slows down.
The red blood cells are the body’s vital transport system, carrying oxygen to every living tissue, they wear out every four months –the old ones are destroyed in the spleen and replaced by the new ones that the body is constantly making.
As everyone knows, our nails and hair keep growing though our lifetime so they’re also constantly regenerating; it takes ten month for a full toenail to grow, only six months for a fingernail and the hair generally grows 1cm each month.

But you might be wondering how all these regeneration processes take place. So, what happens is that the old matter and waste our bodies produce –old cells and toxins- are transported to the intestines for elimination along with the food waste; in the meantime, new matter is created from nutrients (vitamins, minerals, protein) in food in the intestinal track that are absorbed through the intestinal wall and get into the blood stream where they are distributed accordingly to the body regeneration schedule.

So you may not be as old as you thought you were but and as you have noticed by now, the new cells that form our bodies are produced from what we eat so you better make sure that you are the best “version” of yourself by nourishing your body with the appropriate foods.

A plant based diet –vegan or not – is the one that provides you with the best quality nutrients and minerals that your body needs to thrive on. Eating in abundance of fruits and vegetables is by far the best way to take care of you. I want to challenge you on increasing the fruits and veggies in your daily intake of food. I want you to think –at every bite- that your body will take what you are putting into your mouth as prime matter to reconstruct itself.
